Students Organize Central Asian Oil, Gas and Mining Taxation Conference

The Central Asian Tax Research Center at KIMEP (CATRC), jointly with the American Chamber of Commerce, The International Fiscal Association, The Association of Taxpayers of Kazakhstan and Kazenergy, held an international conference on “Oil, Gas and Mining Taxation.”

The conference took place from June 20th to the 21st at KIMEP.

The event featured discussions of the fiscal tools connected with the extraction of mineral resources in Central Asia. Oil, gas and mining experts from across the region attended, including Jeyhun Mamedov, formerly of the Ministry of Taxes of the Republic of Azerbaijan; Bakhtiyar Aslanbayli, Tax Compliance and Reporting Team Leader of BP (Azerbaijan); Iskander Zharkenov, an auditor and senior consultant at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (Kazakhstan); Michael Wagner, tax manager at KPO (Kazakhstan); Kubanyshbek Sagaliyev, a tax advisor for PriceWaterhouseCoopers (Kyrgyzstan); Vladimir Tyutyuryukov, a senior lecturer at KIMEP; and B Ganhuleg, a tax specialist at Centerra Gold (Mongolia).

Damir Yermagambetov, BSc-4, the conference coordinator, joined CATRC in the spring semester. During a short period of time, he became actively involved in the development of the Center.

When asked about the conference, he said, “With the help of this conference, participants became more familiar with global developments in this area of taxation. The event involved comprehensive analysis, presentations as well as discussions concerning oil and gas taxation in Central Asia.”

Tax specialists, accountants and students had the opportunity to take part in the conference to learn about tax regimes and global trends.
